Empanadas are close cousins of Polish pierogi. They are baked, not boiled, and can be filled with a variety of delicious fillings. They are one of the pillars of Latin American cuisine, popular in practically all Iberian countries, especially in Argentina. They are eaten as an appetizer, often sold at street stands, but can also be a nutritious dish served at fancy restaurants. Depending on the ingredients, they can be vegetarian or meat. Argentinian empanadas are served warm, but they are also delicious cold, perfect for a picnic (eating them does not require a plate!) or snack. The additions can be easily adapted to the season and the tastes of the family members or guests. Like any dish with a long history, they have many regional variants.
